How one-way vision film works

Perforated window vinyl is punched with thousands of small holes. Your graphic is printed on the white outside face; the back is black. From the street, the eye sees the printed area and reads a solid image. From inside, the black backing disappears and you look straight out through the holes, as if through light sunglasses. Your staff keeps the daylight and the view of the street, and the sidewalk sees your brand.

70/30 or 50/50

  • 70/30 means 70% printed vinyl and 30% open holes. It gives the richest color and is our pick for storefronts and building glass.
  • 50/50 means half print, half holes. You get the clearest view out at the cost of some color. It is the usual choice for vehicle rear windows.

What businesses use it for

  • Storefront promotions, hours and brand walls
  • "Coming soon" and leasing graphics on vacant units
  • Restaurant and salon privacy at table height
  • Office and lobby glass
  • School and gym mascots and team graphics
  • Vehicle rear windows on SUVs, vans and pickups

Is perforated film legal on a rear car window in Illinois?

Yes. Illinois law (625 ILCS 5/12-503) allows perforated or decorative graphics on windows behind the driver, as long as the vehicle has a side mirror on each side. Nothing may go on the windshield except a tint strip in the top 6 inches.

Designing artwork that works on perf

  • Go big. Aim for at least 1″ of letter height for every 10 feet of viewing distance.
  • Use strong contrast. The holes lighten every color a little.
  • Skip hairlines and tiny details, which fall into the holes.
  • Keep faces, logos and phone numbers clear of window bars and seams.

How long it lasts

Printed perforated film is rated for about a year outdoors. We laminate it with an optically clear film so rain does not fill the holes and blur the view. Most shops change seasonal graphics before then anyway. At night, with the store lit and the street dark, people outside can see in through the holes.
